The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented media mogul Tyler Perry and his foundation, The Perry Foundation, with the Governors Award, which is one of it’s most prestigious honors, during the 2020 Emmy Awards

This special award has been presented every year since 2009 to “an individual, company, organization or project for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences or management of television which is either of a cumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to go beyond the scope of the Emmy Awards presented in the categories and areas of the competition.”

In other words, you have to do something which is absolutely amazing and impactful to the world to win.

Tyler Perry was selected because of the way that he has built an empire of inclusion. No one in Hollywood has done more to sput diversity on and off screen than he has.

His many TV shows, Movies and studios have always given black, latin, LGBTS and other minority groups a fair shot at work and stardom. This award is the industry’s small way of recognizing this and appreciating him for it.

Additionally, Governors Award selection committee Chair Eva Basler said in a press statement: “Tyler Perry has changed the face of television and inspired a new generation of content creators. He pioneered a new brand of storytelling that engages people of color both in front of and behind the camera, and his shows have resonated with a global audience.”
